How To Measure Window Glass For Replacement

Do you measure out a window from within or outside?

The virtually accurate measurement for a window is taken on the exterior of the edifice.

Don't make the mistake of measuring the window frame! The measurements should be taken of the discontinuity opening where the window is fitted. Otherwise, you could just be measuring an existing badly fitting frame.

If you imagine that once an former window is removed from the wall leaving a pigsty, that is the area y'all want to measure. Endeavor to scrape away insulation and rendering to get to the edge of the brick that will be the edge of the opening.

Measure out brick to brick.

Concord the tape measure out straight and taut

To get a really authentic mensurate, the tape measure must be held tight. For a window that is bigger than y'all tin can stretch, it's better to utilise ii people.

Keep the record measure out direct from point to point across the frame so you are non measuring on a diagonal.

Take your readings in metric millimetres as this is the standard used.

Measure the meridian of the window

Accept three measurements for the height:

  • Ane from the centre
  • One from each side of the window opening

The reason we have more than one measurement is to get the average reading as not all frames are fully square.

Once y'all have your three readings, the smallest measure would be the 1 you use.

Mensurate the width of the window

Repeat the process for measuring the peak and take three readings for the width. One in the eye and at each side.

Apply the smallest reading.

Measure out to bank check the frame is square

Bank check to see if the discontinuity is foursquare by taking a diagonal measurement.

Take 2 measurements from bottom left to the top right and so bottom right to pinnacle left.

If the measurements are the aforementioned, your window opening is foursquare.

It's not uncommon for window frames and openings to driblet and become misaligned over time as buildings naturally shift. You can see this clearly on older properties.

This is known every bit a 'racked' window and a window that is racked significantly tin can cause issues fitting new frames. Discuss this with your installer and manufacturer.

The 10mm deduction rule

Some manufacturers will enquire to deduct between v-10mm from the brick-to-brick measurements.

When a window is installed, the frame needs some tolerance around it to allow for it to be installed and to accommodate natural shifting.

  • Too little tolerance and the window might not fit later on the sealant is practical.
  • Too much tolerance and the window volition have micro gaps between the frame and wall reducing free energy efficiency.

Ask your manufacturer how much they want to deduct from the measurements for tolerance.

Don't forget the quondam rule 'mensurate twice; cut one time'

Check your measurements at least two or 3 times to make sure you have them right. Information technology's much less costly to take the fourth dimension when measuring than to notice yous accept a trouble afterward frames have been fabricated.

Be articulate when giving your measurements to a manufacturer what you lot have measured.

All advice given is a guide only, and then please bank check with your installer or manufacturer about how they specifically want their measurements taken.
